Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route
A little history on one of the main routes to see Game of Thrones Locations Ireland, the Causeway Coastal Route: The area that is now known as Northern Ireland is one of deep conflict between the English and the Irish. Partitioned in 1920, tentative peace did not arrive in the region until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Though often neglected in tours of the island before that due to the unstable safety of the area, tourism has been on the rise since the Agreement, which is great because the area is one of incredible natural beauty that is really not to be missed.
In recent times, the Causeway Coastal route has become one of the most popular paths to see the Game of Thrones Locations Ireland, as well as the official Game of Thrones tour. A lot of the filming for Game of Thrones took place in Northern Ireland, and the popularity of the show has brought many visitors to see the breathtaking natural filming sites for themselves. Use this article as one of your map to the Game of Thrones Locations: Ireland - all of the Ireland filming locations are in Northern Ireland!

Tollymore Forest Park
Every Game of Thrones Map should have the beautiful Tollymore Forest Park listed on it. More than 600 hectares, with the Mourne Mountains on one side and the sea on the other, the title of Area of Outstanding Beauty is well deserved. The park is well known for its many bridges spanning the Shimna River and its fabulous picnic spots. There are also several garden follies and attention-grabbing manmade and natural points of interest throughout the park. Some of the sights may be familiar as the lands around Winterfell in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
The four main trails through the park are color coded, circular paths. The shortest at half a mile is the blue trail is the Arboretum Path that takes visitors through the oldest arboreta in Ireland landscaped with trees from around the world. The red trail is three miles, and this Rivers Trail takes you along the river past the Hermitage, the cascades, and the many stone bridges. The black trail is five and a half miles, and a hike along the Mountain Trail starts along the River and then takes visitors up in to the woodland and then circles back to the rivers. There’s a three-mile addition to the black trail called the Drinns trail for the more adventurous walkers, with incredible views of Bryansford, Castlewellan and Slieve Croob, before returning to the Mountains Trail.

Direwolf Pups are Found - This is the bridge across where the Starks find the direwolf pups
Dead Wildling Pit - In the very first episode, a circle of chopped up wildlings is found in the snow north of The Wall. Although this picture is lacking on snow.
Just outside of Tollymore Forest Park is the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa, which is the most amazing hotel in the southeastern area of Northern Ireland. It makes for an excellent base to explore Tollymore Forest Park as well as the Strangford Castle Ward and the Inch Abbey. Staying here will also give you an opportunity to visit the Game of Thrones Studio Tour, which is nearby but out of the way for a single day drive through the area.
Strangford: Castle Ward and The Cuan
Over the Mountains of Mourne, a visit to the conservation village of Strangford, with Castle Ward and The Cuan, is well worth the time. Castle Ward, with its fascinating split of two distinct architectural styles, is the result of a marital disagreement. Lord Bango liked the classical Palladian style and Lady Ann preferred the Georgian gothic, so half of the house is done in each, inside and out. The property features a newly restored Victorian garden, water adventures on the Lough, and a tea room to refresh yourself after your explorations.
A visit to this national Trust property will bring familiar view to fans of Game of Thrones, since part of the series were filmed here. Tickets are 10 euros and should be booked ahead. Fans will also want the stop by and maybe even stay over at The Cuan in the village, with its first-class accommodations and intricately carved Game of Thrones door depicting the opening title sequence of the show.

Inch Abbey
Though there was a monastic presence on the site as early as 800, the current ruins of Inch Abbey date to the 12th century and they offer lovely views of River Quoile. Game of Thrones aficionados will probably recognize the site as being associated with “The King of the North”, Robb Stark.
Game of Thrones Maps: Inch Abbey
Robb's Army Waits - Robb Stark's army waits to cross the Trident
Cushendun Caves
The Game of Thrones series has also made Cushendun Caves in Ballymena a popular site for fans to visit. Even if you’re not a fan of the series, the caves are lovely and the view over the sea to Scotland can be breathtaking on a clear day. The beach and the village of Ballymena itself also offer a charming afternoon’s exploration.

To see this location you’ll need to book the 3-day tour.
Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge
Not for those with a fear of heights, Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge near Ballycastle, is an impressive structure is one of Northern Ireland’s most popular sites. Believed to have originally been built by salmon fisherman to access the island of Carrickarede, which means rock of casting in Irish, the bridge over the sea and rocks is some 30 metres up and 20 metres across. The views are incredible, but not for the faint of heart.
Used as the rope bridge between the towers of Castle Greyjoy in the Iron Isles.
Game of Thrones Maps: Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge

Ballintoy Harbour
Accessed by a steep winding road, nearby Ballintoy Harbour, a kilometre from the village of Ballintoy, is an artist’s heaven. Giant’s Causeway
Perhaps the most iconic site in Northern Ireland, the Giant's Causeway, near Bushmills, is both an Area of Outstanding Beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique formation has inspired plenty of myths, including being built by the giant, Finn MacCool, so he could fight a Scottish giant.
While not very accessible to those with mobility issues, the walk down to the shore to view the unique basalt columns is well worth it. If you have time the loop past some of the more interesting and whimsically-named formations, like the Wishing Chair, the Giant’s Boot, and the Organ, is also a good idea. While a walk along the stones is free, there is also a guided tour as well as audio guides available in 11 languages.
While this location doesn’t show up in Game of Thrones, it’s still an amazing spot to see in Northern Ireland, plus it’s included in the The Game of Thrones northern tour that will bring you to Ballintoy Harbour and the Dark Hedges.

This is another stop on the Game of Thrones northern tour!

Binevenagh Forest
Binevenagh Forest along the western end of the Antrim Plateau is another Area of Outstanding Beauty that was captured in the filming of Game of Thrones. To see this location you’ll need to book the 3-day tour.
Malin Head
While not Northern Ireland, UK, but located in Republic of Ireland, Malin Head is the northern most point of the Irish mainland. With both beautiful beaches and rugged cliffs and rock formations, the novelty of being the northerly tip is not all Malin Head has to offer. Hike along the coast to Hell’s Hole or check out The Tower, which was used as a signal point between Europe and North America. A brisk swim in the summer, or an ideal Northern Lights viewing spot in the winter, the area will surprise you with all it has to offer.
This beautiful spot was not used in Game of Thrones, but it was used as a Star Wars filming location!
To see this location you’ll need to book the 3-day tour.
Blakes of the Hollow
It wouldn’t be a trip to Ireland without a visit to a pub, and Blakes of the Hollow in Enniskillen is one of the most famous and best recognized. They also have one of the Game of Thrones doors, this one depicting the dragons that signal the return of House Targaryen. With a stellar collection of whiskeys and a restaurant downstairs, there is something for everyone here.
In January 2016, a storm brought down some of the iconic Dark Hedge Trees. The wood was salvaged and transformed into unique works of art in the form of 10 intricately crafted Game of Thrones doors. The doors work together to tell the tale of Season 6, forming a Game of Thrones trail connecting 10 pubs and restaurants with filming locations across Northern Ireland.
