Remote Work Lifestyle: My Journey into Software Quality Assurance and Testing

By Muneeb Ur Rehman, Software Quality Assurance (QA) expert

Introduction to Software Quality Assurance and Testing

My name is Muneeb Ur Rehman, and I am a Software Quality Assurance and Testing expert. I began my remote career in 2019, specializing in Software Quality Assurance. Today, I earn a substantial income from remote work. My journey started small on Fiverr in 2019, where it was challenging to find jobs due to being new to the platform. However, after a few months, I secured my first position as a Software Quality Assurance expert. Although this job didn’t offer significant pay, I took advice from my peers and began searching for long-term opportunities on LinkedIn. After a long search, I finally landed a position that aligned with my career goals and allowed me to work with advanced quality assurance software to ensure the highest standards were met.

Before Remote Work: How I Found My Path to Software Quality Assurance and Testing

Before I delve into how I transitioned into remote work, let me tell you about my previous career. I graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2016. Afterward, I started teaching computer courses at a private school, earning 25,000 PKR a month, which wasn’t enough to sustain a living. My school was located 50 kilometers from my home, and I spent around 10,000 PKR on fuel alone. With other expenses like electricity bills, groceries, and rent, I struggled financially.

Realizing that my current situation wasn’t sustainable, I began researching alternative career paths. I explored various industries but couldn’t find anything that suited my skills. It was then that I recognized my strength in programming, a subject in which I had excelled at university. The question became: how could I secure a job related to programming, particularly in the software development process, and work with quality assurance software that would allow me to meet specific requirements?

I learned about freelancing platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer. Although it was difficult to secure jobs at first, I eventually landed my first position as a Software Quality Assurance expert on Fiverr. That’s when I decided to search for remote programming jobs across various platforms, submitting my resume to multiple sites.

Finally, one day, I was contacted for a remote Software Quality Assurance expert role via LinkedIn. After a successful interview, I was hired. My first salary was $2,500, which was equivalent to 550,000 PKR. It was a life-changing moment for me, as I finally had the time and financial stability to focus on improving my skills and working with quality assurance software to deliver high-quality results.

Challenges in Software Quality Assurance and Testing

The transition from being a school teacher to a Software Quality Assurance expert wasn’t easy. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was adapting to the sharp learning curve required for the quality assurance testing process, including understanding test automation, black box testing, and the entire software development life cycle.

Some of the specific challenges I faced included:

  • Finding Bugs: Locating and fixing defects in the code required in-depth knowledge of the testing quality assurance process and the specific requirements of each product. Working with advanced quality assurance software was crucial to ensuring that all bugs were caught before deployment.

  • Staying Current with Technology: The development process is fast-paced, requiring continuous learning of new tools and methods like integration testing, system testing, and functional testing. Staying current also meant addressing security concerns and ensuring that data was handled properly using the best quality assurance software tools available.

  • Maintaining Code Quality: Ensuring clean, high-quality software demanded diligence in writing test cases and reviewing quality control reports to ensure that the final product met client requirements.

  • Managing Multiple Projects: Organizing my workload across different projects was tough, but I used project management tools and quality assurance software to handle the workload more effectively and ensure that each product was delivered on time with continuous improvement.

Looking back, having access to a structured learning path, such as a remote coding bootcamp, could have eased my transition. These programs now offer guided learning in quality assurance, coding, and testing—all tailored to match industry demands.

Skills and Tools for Success in Software Quality Assurance and Testing

Thanks to my Computer Science degree, I had a solid foundation that helped me transition into Software Quality Assurance and Testing. Key skills and experiences that helped me included:

  • Understanding the software development lifecycle and how user needs shape the requirements for a product.

  • Gaining experience with test automation, acceptance testing, and black box methods during my internship.

  • Writing SQL queries for system validations to make sure that data integrity was maintained during the testing process.

Remote work requires self-reliance, and learning how to balance the testing process with personal projects was key. I learned the hard way that quality is more important than quantity.
